To celebrate women and mothers, the Coptic Orthodox Church’s Papal Office for Projects was joined by the National Council for Women (NCW) to celebrate “Women’s Development for the Development of Society”.
The celebration was held on 21 March, Mothers Day in Egypt, at the papal headquarters in Abbassiya, Cairo, and was opened by Pope Tawadros II. An exhibition was held to display products made by 120 women from various Egyptian governorates, who receive the support of the Papal Office for Projects.
Representatives from the Church and the NCW, as well as public figures, attended the celebration. Among them were Anba Nofeir, Bishop of Shebin al-Qanater; Anba Axios, Bishop-General of Churches of Ain Shams, Matareya and Hilmeyet al-Zeitoun; and Jacqueline Azer, Deputy to the Alexandria Governor.
The day included a seminar on financial inclusion; it aimed at offering the women attending much-needed advice and support under the global economic crisis. A medical seminar was also held, offering women awareness on the periodic checkups they should observe for early diagnosis of diseases such as breast cancer, as well as on the importance of good nutrition.
Dr Azer talked to the women on the important role played by women in society. Anba Axios talked to the women an their significant impact on their local communities.
At the end of the celebration, a number of women were honoured for their struggle and success stories. Then they were given the chance to tour the exhibition and visit the medical unit that was available in coordination with the Ministry of Health. The medical unit is available for three days, and it includes clinics for dentistry, ophthalmology, internal medicine and women’s health.
