The Coptic Orthodox Church of St Mary and St Abraam in Brighton, UK, last week celebrated its Silver Jubilee which coincides with al-Nayrouz, the Feast of the Martyrs. Nairouz is also Coptic New Year Day: 11 September; this year is 1735 according to the Coptic calendar of the martyrs.
Attending the event at St Mary and St Abraam was Anba Pola, Bishop of Tanta, who is supervisor of the Church.
Since the Coptic Orthodox Church this year marks 100 years on the foundation of its Sunday School movement, the event at St Mary and St Abraam included a celebration of the Sunday School centenary. The Church’s boys and girls chanted hymns and performed a number of operettas including a joyful scene in which children were dressed as the various saints.
During the celebration, the priests who served in the church since it was established were honoured. Also the students among the congregation, who had attained excellence in scholastic achievement were celebrated and honoured.
