Naguib Gabrail, head of Egyptian Union for Human Right Organisation (EUHRO), has filed an official complaint with the emergency court today against Abu-Islam Ahmed Abdallah and his supporters for twice attacking the lawyers of the defence team in the case against Abu-Islam.
Abu-Islam is charged with deriding religion, and the court has twice adjourned—the second time was today when it adjourned to 21 October—to further look into the documents presented.
The supporters of Abu-Islam assaulted with wooden beams the lawyers Naguib Gabrail, Mamdouh Ramzy, Maged Hanna, Karam Ghobrial, Girgis Bibawy, and Ramy Kamel of the Maspero Youth Union as they left the courtroom. Gabrail was injured in his shoulder, Kamel in his face, and Bibawy in several parts in his body. When they went to the public hospital in the neighbourhood—the Nasr City public hospital—the doctors there refused to issue a report of the injuries, claiming it was not their responsibility. The lawyers thus filed their complaint with the court.
Gabrail accused the Interior Ministry of negligence in protecting the Coptic lawyers.
Abu-Islam is being tried for burning a copy of the Bible some two weeks ago during the demonstrations in front of the US Embassy in Cairo to protest against the US production of the film The Innocence of Muslims that mocked the Prophet Mohamed.
