Cairenes are being treated to an exhibition of artworks by George Bahgoury, a contemporary Egyptian painter, cartoonist, and sculptor who has gained worldwide fame for art of exceptional quality.
A solo exhibition of Bahgoury’s artworks is being hosted by Demi Art Gallery in Zamalek, Cairo; it opened on 22 October, and runs till 8 November.
According to the gallery’s page on Instagram, “The exhibition displays a very exclusive collection of over 100 masterpiece for Bahgoury they have never been seen before!”
The exhibition includes a special corner for Bahgoury’s sketching—a practice he has incessantly engaged in all his life.
Bahgoury is a magical mixture that combines light, joy, and beauty. God gave him lines of gold, a painter’s eye, and the secret of expression. His hand possesses secrets that create beauty, and the versatility of his brush uncannily expresses all that is Egyptian. His artistic project is deeply rooted in Egyptian culture, and coming from the heart; heritage and folklore.
The Demi gallery exhibition displays a artworks which Bahgoury created in different phases of his career, proving his ability to use various artistic techniques.
What distinguishes Bahgoury’s art is that it translates his sentiments and views in a way easily understood by any viewer and, more important, impossible to forget. Because his world is pertinent to people’s emotions, and because of his energised commitment to issues of the community, he is widely respected and appreciated in Egypt and worldwide. His style is characterised by its cubism and vibrant colours.
On the margins of his paintings or drawings, he does not mind to add writing or commenting with few words or phrases that offer a taste of wit and humour. Many of his works derive from his early childhood in the village of Bahgoura in southern Egypt [Upper Egypt] where he was born in 1932, also from details of his life in various places in the world.
Bahgoury roamed far and wide since throughout his life. He went from Bahgoura, to Cairo where he lived and worked for years, gaining fame as a singular political cartoonist. He moved to Paris during the 1980s where he lived for many years. He now lives in Egypt, where his heart beats to an Egyptian tune, but he returns to Paris time and again to experience and enjoy the world of modern art. His sketchbook always accompanies him wherever he goes; from Cairo to Paris, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Tunisia or elsewhere.
