The Cairo Opera House theatres are scheduled to reopen on the evening of Thursday 9 July following months of closure on account of COVID-19. All health protective measures will be enforced regarding guests, performers, and workers.

Under supervision of Khaled Dagher, Head of the Artistic House of Music, Opera, and Ballet, concerts will feature Egypt’s star pop performers and music ensembles of Egyptian and oriental music, jazz, and Sufi and religious music. There will also be ballet and modern dance shows, as well as opera performances.

The full schedule is posted online.

The first concert will be held at the outdoor al-Nafoura Theatre and will feature singing by the Cairo Opera House’s Arabic music ensembles.

Other concerts will feature top tier musicians, ensembles, orchestras and singers including Muhammad Mounir, Medhat Saleh, and Ali al-Haggar; pianist Omar Khairat; marimba player Nesma Abdel-Aziz; jazz performer Yehia Khalil; as well as the Cairo Symphony Orchestra and the Cairo Opera House Ballet Group.

Watani started as an Egyptian weekly Sunday newspaper published in Cairo. The word Watani is Arabic for “My Homeland”. The paper was founded in 1958 by the prominent Copt Antoun Sidhom (1915 – 1995), who strove for the establishment of a civil, democratic society in Egypt, where all Egyptians would enjoy full citizenship rights regardless of their religious denomination. To this day when Watani is published as a weekly paper and an online news site, the objective remains the same. Those in charge of Watani view this role as a patriotic all-Egyptian vocation. Special attention is given to shedding light on Coptic culture and tradition as authentically Egyptian, this being a topic largely disregarded or little-understood by Egypt’s media. Watani is deeply dedicated to offer its readers high quality, extensive, objective, credible and well-researched media coverage, with special focus on Coptic issues, culture, heritage, and contribution to Egyptian society.
