The Grand Hypostyle Hall of the famed Karnak Temple complex on the Nile’s East Bank in Luxor is already 95 per cent restored, as recently announced by Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA).
SCA Secretary-General, Mostafa Waziry, said that the restoration was worked by the SCA young Egyptian restorers together with graduates of Luxor and South Valley universities, and Luxor Restoration Institute.
The columns were meticulously cleaned, removing the sand, dust, and bird droppings that had accumulated on the column walls throughout long ages, obscuring the original engravings and colours. The restoration work, Mr Waziry said, was done according to international conservation standards and protocols. Now, he said, the colours are back to their stunning original brightness.
Karnak constitutes a complex of temples that were built to worship the god Amun, the main deity of ancient Thebes, present-day Luxor. Egypt’s kings started building it during the Middle Kingdom (2040 – 1782BC), adding to it considerably throughout the New Kingdom (1570 – 1069BC) and Late Period (664 – 332BC), up until the Ptolemaic Greek period (332 – 30BC).
As most Egyptian temples, Karnak was based on an east-west axis, but it is further distinguished by a north-south axis that connects it to Luxor Temple through the 2,700 metres long, 76 metres wide Avenue of the Rams, aka Avenue of the Sphinxes walkway.
Other than the numerous temples, colossi, and obelisks it includes, Karnak also features a huge purification lake.
The hypostyle hall that is being restored includes 134 columns, each some 20 metres high. Restoration works started in 2021.
