The Federation of the Egyptian Communities in Europe has selected Moushira Khattab, President of Egypt’s National Council for Human Rights (NCHR), as the leading female figure for 2023.
A statement issued by the federation which is headed by Prof. Mohamed al-Zafzaf, explained that Dr Khattab was selected for her prominent role in the field of human rights and her transparency regarding the human rights situation in Egypt in light of the current challenges, also for the attention she gives to human rights issues whether on the local or international fronts.
The statement went on commending Dr Khattab’s active role and care for childhood and motherhood issues in Egypt, and how throughout her career she was able to include childhood and motherhood issues within the State’ national planning. Ms Khattab, the statement said, has helped and supported women, defended their issues and empowered them.
Dr Khattab for her part, thanked the Federation of the Egyptian Communities in Europe, and commended the role they play in connecting Egyptians in Europe with their homeland.
Moushira Khattab was born 1946. She was Egypt’s Minister of State for Family and Population from 2009 to 2011, Secretary-General of the National Council of Childhood and Motherhood from 1999 until 2010, and before that Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. She was an active member of Egypt’s diplomatic corps and served as Egypt’s ambassador to several countries. In 2016, Ms Khattab was nominated for the post of UNESCO Director General, but lost to the French Audrey Azoulay. In 2021, she was appointed President of the NCHR, succeeding Muhammad Fayek, and becoming the first female to head the Egypt’s human rights council.
