A building that collapsed in the working class eastern district of Gisr al-Sweiss in Cairo has so far claimed 25 lives. Another 25 were injured and moved to hospital; 18 among them have been treated and discharged whereas seven remain in hospital.
According to security sources, efforts are ongoing to reclaim bodies from the rubble of the 10-storey building which fell down yesterday 27 March. The 10 storeys included four that had been added illegally to what was originally a six- storey building.
Cairo governorate sources said that a technical committee has been charged with inspecting nearby buildings to determine if any was affected by the collapse.
It is not uncommon for buildings to collapse in Egypt because of violations of building regulations and illegal building extensions under lax government oversight.
