Visitors coming to Egypt from Canada need to comply with revised visa rules announced by the Egyptian Embassy in Ottawa at the end of last August. The new entry visa measures go into effect the first day of October.
“As of October 1st, 2023, Canadian passport holders will no longer be able to obtain a visa upon arrival at any of the Egyptian entry ports,” said a statement on the Embassy Facebook page. Instead, the statement read, they should obtain an advance visa from any Egyptian embassy or consulate.
The decision caused an outcry among Egyptian Canadians, who appeared to have not been exempted from the new visa regulations. Their protest however, brought on a swift response from Egypt’s authorities. On 6 September, the Embassy announced that Canadian Egyptians may either obtain a free visa from Egyptian embassies and consulates, or get a paid entry visa upon arrival.
Obtaining a free visa from embassies and consulates only requires Canadian Egyptians to submit a document proving their Egyptian nationality, such as a birth certificate, a national ID card or a passport.
However, in the second case, Canadian Egyptians will still have to obtain a certificate from Egyptian embassies and consulates proving their Egyptian nationality, in order for them to present at entry ports or to airline authorities.
Canada is home to a 300,000 strong community of Egyptian origin.
