A report titled “Alternative Medicine: A Global and Local Overview” has been recently released by the Cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Centre. The detailed study delves into the concept of alternative medicine, key stakeholders, the role played by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in devising a strategy for traditional and alternative medicine, and the standing of such medicine in Egypt.
With use of alternative medicine surging in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic, the report highlights the global export and import of medicinal herbs. The global market for medicinal herbs was valued at USD3.6 billion in 2022. At a global market share of 4.7 per cent, Egypt is fourth on the list of exporters of these herbs; following China at a 24.7 per cent share, India at 12.6 per cent, and Germany at 6 per cent. The US was the top importer of medicinal herbs, followed by Germany, Japan, and China.
