Egypt is set to host three worldwide aquasport championships in the Red Sea resort town of Hurghada on 8 – 15 May 2023.
The global sports events will be organised at Soma Bay, a coastal resort located about 45km south of Hurghada International Airport.
They will include the World Cup for water ballet, World Cup for open water swimming, and the competitions for water beach ball in which some 600 contestants will participate.
Speaking to journalists on 9 April during an event to announce the details of the upcoming championships, Youth and Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhi stressed the Egyptian government’s support for all sports federations, including the Egyptian Swimming Federation (ESF).
He hailed the robust relationship between the ESF and the International Swimming Federation, as well as the latter’s commitment to maintaining cooperation for organising international tournaments in Egypt, which has a substantial sports infrastructure that enables it to host large global events.
Yasser Idris, head of the Egyptian Swimming Federation said that to date, 32 countries have announced their intention to participate in the championships. He expected that some 40 countries would apply to join the competition by 12 April, the deadline for receiving participants’ applications.
