Middle East Christian exodus
The final statement of the annual meeting of the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) held earlier this month in Cyprus called on “Muslim partners in the region, including Muslim religious scholars and intellectual elites” to condemn assaults on Christians, their property and their faith. Such abuse leads many Christians to flee their country, the statement said. The MECC stressed its commitment to Christian-Islamic dialogue since “interaction with Muslims is an everyday activity for Christians” in the region. They called for respect of human dignity in the Middle East and for equality for all citizens, regardless of religion, before the law.
Repricing gas
Egypt’s Supreme Council of Energy chaired by Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif is considering a rise in the price of Egyptian natural gas exports to Israel, Spain, France, Italy and Arab countries. The move comes in light of EU resolutions to amend gas and oil product prices in line with recently-spiraling global prices. Price amendments introduced and applied between 2000 and August 2008 have garnered some $20 billion for Egypt.
Pharaohs in 3D
The Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs tour, organised by National Geographic and Arts and Exhibitions International in cooperation with the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, started on Friday 3 October at the Dallas Museum of Art, to be followed by other US and international cities. It is accompanied by a companion 3D movie experience presented by Giant Screen Films’ Egypt 3D: Secrets of the Mummies, executed by Dolby(R) 3D Digital Cinema. “Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs has attracted five million visitors in five cities,” said Bryan Harris of Arts and Exhibition International. “Viewing Egypt 3D in Dolby 3D Digital Cinema allows for a deeper exhibition experience.”
