Tagammu Ahzab al-Mu’tamar al-Watani, literally the convention of the national congress parties, was launched yesterday. The spokesman for the National Congress, Ayman Nour, himself founder of the Ghadd al-Thawra [liberal] Party announced that the National Congress includes 25 parties and should not be considered a mere political coalition. He explained that it is the foundation for a complete merger between the [secular] parties and movements involved. Nour highlighted that the secular Egyptian public had repeatedly called for the secular political movements to join forces under one leadership.
Nour announced that the former presidential candidate and Arab League chief Amr Moussa has been chosen to head to the National Congress. Moussa, Nour stressed, was chosen in his capacity as an Egyptian national symbol. Nour also said that other parties and movements were planning to join the congress.
Nagib Abadir, member of the policy committee of the political party al-Misreyeen al-Ahrar (The Free Egyptians) spoke for many when he told Watani that his party joined the National Congress with high hopes, especially that it shares the aspirations and vision of most liberal parties in Egypt, and since it has long believed these parties should join forces.
Nour said that all civic movements were welcome to join the National Congress; he extended a special invitation to Mohamed ElBaradei and former presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahi.
