Anba Macarius, Bishop-General of Minya, denied that he ever said that the government was using the attacks against Copts as a pretext to attack the Muslim Brothers. In this light, he said, words to that effect published by the Wall Street Journal are totally untrue.
The Bishop had last Friday issued a statement in which he listed the destruction of the churches and Christian institutions in his parish, and in which he declared that the Church absolutely rejected any attempt to be made party to disputes between any body and the security apparatus. “We never levelled accusations against any State institution of having any hand in the attacks against the churches and Coptic property,” he said
Anba Macarius said he well appreciated the efforts of the Interior Ministry to maintain law and order, and understood the current conditions in Egypt. He also said he hoped for better security presence in case of any complaints.
