“Education Integration from vision to implementation, challenges and solutions” was the title of the second conference for educational integration which was held yesterday, under the auspices of the Minister of Education, Gamal al-Arabi. The conference was held in Cairo, organised by the Egyptian Foundation for Institutions, as well as Plan Egypt—a branch of Plan International.
During the conference, Arabi pointed to the efforts that should be given the training and qualification of teachers who have to deal with students with special needs in integrational schools across Egypt. He explained that it is inevitable to keep pace with the whole world which now favours the integration of those with special needs in the community, beginning with their schooling.
The conference, whose main objective was to assert that educational integration goes hand in hand with social justice, discussed different experiences of educational integration which took place in Egypt, as well as the challenges they met. Suggested practical solutions were discussed, and the Ministry of Education presented its future work plan regarding this issue, as well as the tools it plans to employ, given its current resources.
The concept of integration as a right for children with special needs, and as a means of developing education was introduced and lengthily explained by Naguib Khuzam, of Caritas Egypt. He familiarised the audience with the contributions already made by Caritas Egypt in that field, highlighting the challenges faced by the Caritas team in this regard.
