“Speak, We Will Listen” was the slogan of a forum launched in Cairo on 2 December by Egypt’s National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, annually celebrated on 3 December.
The forum was held by the NCPD in collaboration with the State’s Hayat Karima (Decent Life) Foundation, at the Child’s Civilisation and Creativity Centre (the Children’s Museum) in Heliopolis, Cairo. It was organised together with the “Employment Forum for Economic Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities”.
Activities included family counseling sessions, artistic and theatrical performances, handicrafts workshops for children, a specialised medical convoy.
There was also an office to assist persons with disabilities get “golden cards” issued by the government for them to access a comprehensive range of specialised services.
A fair was held to sell goods and handicrafts produced by persons with disabilities.
The main focus of the forum, however, centred on the economic empowerment of persons with disabilities through offering them entrepreneurship and employment opportunities to allow them economic and social independence.
