A source from inside the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) movement has
informed the Watani that MB has assigned a number of its members to
draft a constitution for Egypt, under the pretext of facilitating the mission
of the national constituent assembly which should be assigned with that
task in the near future. The MB source said the movement will ask for its
draft to be used as a model for Egypt’s new constitution.
It is being circulated that the group in charge has completed drafting four
chapters of the model constitution. The first five articles of the previous
constitution have been kept intact, including the first article on citizenship
rights. The second article, which stipulated that the principles of Islamic
sharia are the main source of legislation, has been changed to substitute
“fundamentals” for “principles”.
The draft includes reduced presidential prerogatives.
This news, which have not yet been officially announced, come at a time
when the MB has announced it was assigning Khairat al-Shater, one of the
movement’s prominent tycoons, with preparing an “economic roadmap”
to rectify the country##s failing economy.
