Fr Makary Younan (1934 – 2022), the prominent Coptic priest famous for his powerful preaching, prayer, and gift for exorcism, passed away a few hours ago in hospital where he was receiving treatment for COVID-19. He had been diagnosed with COVID-19 together with his wife, and had both been hospitalised some two weeks ago. His wife passed way on 7 January.

The funeral service for Fr Makary will be held tomorrow 12 January at St Mark’s Cathedral in Azbakiya in Downtown Cairo.

Fr Makary was born Sabry Younan Abdel-Malek on 1 March 1934, in Assiut some 350km south of Cairo. He earned a BSc degree and a higher diploma in teaching; also a diploma from the Coptic Orthodox seminary, the Clerical College. He went on to work for the Egyptian government for 19 years, then resigned in order to be ordained a priest.

In 1977, Sabry Younan was ordained a priest in Assiut, and named Fr Makary Younan. But he only served in Assiut for a few weeks, after which he was moved to Cairo’s St Mark’s in Azbakiya where he served 44 years.

Watani started as an Egyptian weekly Sunday newspaper published in Cairo. The word Watani is Arabic for “My Homeland”. The paper was founded in 1958 by the prominent Copt Antoun Sidhom (1915 – 1995), who strove for the establishment of a civil, democratic society in Egypt, where all Egyptians would enjoy full citizenship rights regardless of their religious denomination. To this day when Watani is published as a weekly paper and an online news site, the objective remains the same. Those in charge of Watani view this role as a patriotic all-Egyptian vocation. Special attention is given to shedding light on Coptic culture and tradition as authentically Egyptian, this being a topic largely disregarded or little-understood by Egypt’s media. Watani is deeply dedicated to offer its readers high quality, extensive, objective, credible and well-researched media coverage, with special focus on Coptic issues, culture, heritage, and contribution to Egyptian society.
