The Misriyeen al-Ahrar (The Free Egyptians) liberal political party has issued a statement announcing its full support of the Front for Defending al-Azhar (FDA), in face of what it described as the vicious onslaught against the time-honoured moderation of the Islamic institution. Al-Azhar, the history of which goes back to the 10th century, and which is today the topmost authority worldwide on Sunni Islam, is known to embrace a moderate version of Islam and to oppose religious extremism. The Free Egyptians reminded that al-Azhar stands as an old, prestigious institution that projects Islam’s tolerance and reflects the unity of Egyptians in combatting extremist thought.
It called on all political parties and movements, intellectual bodies and NGOs, to support the objectives and moves of FDA in order to protect al-Azhar and its scholars against allegations of apostasy by radical Islamists.
