Egypt is on a three-day national mourning period over the death of Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah. The Emir died on 16 December 2023, aged 86.
President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi issued a statement on 16 December mourning the late Kuwaiti leader, describing him as “the great man who was a supporter of his Arab and Islamic nation, keen on their affairs, wise in his leadership. He offered a lot of sacrifice and dedication to his country.
“May God have mercy on the late Prince, and grant the brotherly Kuwaiti people patience and solace,” the statement read.
Sheikh Nawaf became Kuwait’s Emir upon the death in 2020 of his predecessor, his half-brother Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah.
He had previously served as interior and defence minister.
Kuwait cabinet named Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah Emir of Kuwait.
