The United Nations Information Centre in Cairo, in cooperation with UN-AIDS in Egypt, held a press conference on 2 December to observe World Aids Day 2014 and to launch the Global Aids report.
Walid Kamal from the Health Ministry and National AIDS Programme Manager, Egypt; and Ahmed Khamis, UNAIDS Country Manager, spoke about the main findings of the report and the state of the epidemic in MENA region and Egypt.
Dr Khamis and Dr Kamal said that Egypt will launch a World AIDS Campaign 2014 in December 2014 to achieving three zeros by 2030: Zero new HIV infections, Zero AIDS related deaths and Zero Stigma and Discrimination.
According to Dr Kamal, the National AIDS Programme (NAP) is coordinating its efforts with civil society youth-led organisations and UN agencies. Campaigns will be held in schools, universities, communities, and healthcare settings in Cairo, Alexandria, Ismailia, Minya and Luxor to mark Egypt’s commitment to ending HIV.
