Thursday 18 January the port of Alexandria received the US Navy ships: USS Carney (DDG 64) and USNS Carson City (T-EPF-7). The reception has been considered a clear example of the successful naval cooperation between the two countries.
Besides having some time off in Egypt, the crew of the US Navy welcomed Egyptians on board for a short tour on the first class US navy guided missile destroyer.
“While the visit of Carney and Carson City to this beautiful Egyptian port is noteworthy in itself, the port visit is a reflection of something much more significant: the importance of the strategic partnership between our countries, between our militaries and between our navies,” Deputy Chief of Mission Dorothy Shea said.
Egypt hosted the US biennial military exercise named “The Bright Star 2017” at the recently inaugurated Mohamed Naguib military base on 10 – 20 September 2017.
Joint military exercises have taken place since 1980. Around 200 US troops are expected to take part in the military exercises, which are aimed at strengthening military cooperation between Egypt and the US, since Egypt serves a vital role in preserving regional security and stability.
The new military base includes 1,155 vital facilities, 72 training areas, a major conference hall, a large number of shooting ranges, and residences for the officers, along with 50 solar modules and a tank-transporting container of about 451 modern tankers.
